Nursing home staff can now assist with booster shots, according to the White House

The White House said that facility employees can now administer shots in an effort to combat the low uptake of the most recent COVID-19 omicron booster shots in US nursing homes. This is a significant victory for many, according to one of the top caregiver activists in the country. According to Katie Smith Sloan, president and CEO of LeadingAge, the announcement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention "is truly a positive step, and a demonstration of the good that results when government and providers collaborate to reach a shared goal: keeping older adults, professional caregivers, and communities safe." Smith promised to keep working with and exerting pressure on the CDC, the Department of Health & Human Services, and the White House "to remove impediments," as suggested by providers in their proposal for the All-Hands-On-Deck campaign to improve booster uptake.
